Ballet dancer and choreographer Lois Smith was born in Vancouver, B.C. Though she began intensive dance training late for a ballet dancer — when she was a teenager — Smith’s physical proportions, natural ability and enthusiasm allowed her to make quick progress. In 1951, she and her husband, dancer David Adams, became founding members of the National Ballet of Canada. In her later years, Smith became a noted stained glass artist.
